All Western Australian public schools are reviewed by the Department of Education’s Public School Accountability directorate. A review gives assurance to the local community, the Minister for Education and Training and the Director General about the performance of public schools in delivering high quality education to students. The review acknowledges the achievements of the school and gives feedback to support the Principal and staff with their improvement planning.
Southwell underwent the PSR process in September 2026.
Commendations
The review team found that:
- Strong partnerships with government, community and not-for-profit organisations enhance support for students and families, providing access to a broad range of services and programs, including the edible garden project, vision checks and speech therapy assessments.
- Culturally responsive systems and practices, including Noongar language classes, Aboriginal and Islander education officer (AIEO) support and the Moort-ap Engagement Hub, are established to support student connection, identity and belonging. The highly respected AIEO provides valued leadership and support for cultural safety across the school.
- The school proactively addresses barriers to learning, with initiatives including breakfast and lunch programs, food hampers, uniforms and stationery supporting student wellbeing and readiness to learn.
- Release time and mentoring to use the Special Educational Needs planning and reporting tool strengthen the development of individual learning goals for students with documented plans.
